Many people wish their romantic relationships felt effortless, but according to Dax Shepard, husband of actress Kristen Bell, effort is essential. In an interview with People Now, Shepard revealed the key to their marriage: persistent, intentional work.
“It’s not effortless. It seems effortless,” Shepard explained, mentioning that both he and Bell are candid about attending couples’ therapy. “We work it like a job.”
He emphasized that relationships are not inherently perfect. It’s not a matter of meeting someone and thinking, “Oh, this is a perfect match,” and then simply coasting through life together. Shepard shared that, in his experience, “that’s not how it works.”
For parents raising young children, like Shepard and Bell-who have a 4-year-old daughter, Lincoln, and a 2-year-old daughter, Delta-it’s crucial to carve out time for each other. Shepard told People they intentionally schedule dates and one-on-one activities rather than vaguely planning to spend an evening together.
“You have to take it as seriously as you take your work commitments,” he said. “It must be scheduled and prioritized, or it won’t happen.”
In previous interviews, both Shepard and Bell have been upfront about their relationship’s imperfections and the ongoing effort required to maintain their strong bond. Kristen shared with Women’s Health in August that they are “very aware of the responsibility that we have based on our relationship being in the public eye.”
“It involves a lot of compromise and a significant amount of work.”
Their dedication appears to be paying off, as they have been together since 2007 and married since 2013, making them one of Hollywood’s most genuine and stable couples.
